Vascular Conditions

Vascular Conditions

Clipping / Coiling | AVM (Surgery / SRS)

Vascular brain conditions are disorders related to abnormal blood vessels in the brain, such as aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). These conditions can lead to brain hemorrhage, stroke, seizures, and life-threatening complications if not treated on time. Modern neurosurgery and endovascular techniques allow safe and effective treatment of these vascular conditions.

Brain Aneurysm

Brain Aneurysm is a condition where a weak area in a brain blood vessel bulges like a balloon. If the aneurysm ruptures, it can cause brain hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain), which is a medical emergency.

Symptoms of Brain Aneurysm

Unruptured aneurysm may have no symptoms, but sometimes:

  • Headache
  • Vision problems
  • Eye pain
  • Facial numbness

Ruptured aneurysm symptoms:

  • Sudden severe headache (worst headache of life)
  • Vomiting
  • Neck stiffness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizures
  • Sensitivity to light

Ruptured aneurysm can cause brain hemorrhage and stroke and requires emergency treatment.

Aneurysm Treatment – Clipping

Clipping is a microsurgical procedure in which a small metal clip is placed at the base of the aneurysm to stop blood flow into the aneurysm.

Procedure

  • Craniotomy (small opening in skull)
  • Microscope used for precision surgery
  • Metal clip placed on aneurysm
  • Aneurysm permanently closed

Advantages

  • Permanent solution
  • Very low chance of recurrence
  • Suitable for many types of aneurysms

Aneurysm Treatment – Coiling

Coiling is a minimally invasive endovascular procedure used to treat brain aneurysms without open surgery.

Procedure

  • Catheter inserted through leg artery
  • Catheter guided to brain blood vessel
  • Platinum coils placed inside aneurysm
  • Coils block blood flow and prevent rupture

Advantages

  • No open brain surgery
  • Faster recovery
  • Short hospital stay
  • Less pain
  • Suitable for high-risk patients

Both Clipping and Coiling are advanced procedures used depending on aneurysm size, location, and patient condition.

AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation)

Arteriovenous Malformation is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins in the brain. In AVM, blood flows directly from arteries to veins without normal capillaries, which can cause brain hemorrhage, seizures, or stroke.

Symptoms of AVM

  • Headache
  • Seizures
  • Brain hemorrhage
  • Weakness in body
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Vision problems
  • Balance problems

Sometimes AVM is discovered during brain scans done for other reasons.

AVM Treatment Options

1. AVM Surgery

Microsurgical removal of AVM is performed to completely remove abnormal blood vessels from the brain.

Benefits

  • Complete cure if AVM fully removed
  • Prevents future brain hemorrhage
  • Suitable for accessible AVMs

2. SRS (Stereotactic Radiosurgery)

Stereotactic Radiosurgery is a non-open surgery treatment where focused radiation is used to close abnormal blood vessels in AVM.

Procedure

  • No incision
  • Focused radiation on AVM
  • AVM gradually closes over 1–3 years
  • No hospital stay in many cases

Suitable For

  • Small AVMs
  • Deep brain AVMs
  • High-risk surgery patients
